چکیده

We describe a technique for producing a Maxwell–Boltzmann electron energy distribution using an electron beam ion trap ~EBIT!. The technique was implemented on the Lawrence Livermore EBIT to simulate Maxwellian plasmas. We discuss technical and experimental issues related to these simulations. To verify the fidelity of the quasi-Maxwellian, we have measured line emission due to dielectronic recombination ~DR! and electron impact excitation ~EIE! of heliumlike neon, magnesium, and argon for a range of simulated electron temperatures. The ratio of DR to EIE lines in heliumlike ions is a well understood electron temperature diagnostic. The spectroscopically inferred quasi-Maxwellian temperatures are in excellent agreement with the simulated temperatures. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~00!00609-2#

X-ray spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry of high energy density plasma complemented by LLNL electron beam ion trap experiments

X-ray spectra of high energy density ~HED! Z-pinch plasmas have been analyzed by means of a comprehensive kinetic modeling. A new diagnostic, x-ray spectropolarimetry, was applied to study anisotropy of Z-pinch plasma. This diagnostic is based on theoretical modeling of polarization-dependent spectra measured simultaneously by spectrometers with different sensitivity to polarization. Specifical...

Identification and Plasma Diagnostics Study of Extreme Ultraviolet Transitions in Highly Charged Yttrium

Extreme ultraviolet spectra of the L-shell ions of highly charged yttrium (Y26+–Y36+) were observed in the electron beam ion trap of the National Institute of Standards and Technology using a flat-field grazing-incidence spectrometer in the wavelength range of 4 nm-20 nm. The electron beam energy was systematically varied from 2.3 keV–6.0 keV to selectively produce different ionization stages. ...

Numerical Modeling of Non-equilibrium Plasma Discharge of Hydrogenated Silicon Nitride (SiH4/NH3/H2)

In this work, we model a radiofrequency discharge of hydrogenated silicon nitride in a capacitive coupled plasma reactor using Maxwellian and non-Maxwellian electron energy distribution function. The purpose is to investigate whether there is a real advantage and a significant contribution using non-Maxwellian electron energy distribution function rather than Maxwellian one for determining the ...

Electromagnetically confined plasma target for interaction studies with intense laser fields

The paper describes a novel application of an electron beam ion trap as a plasma target facility for intense laser–plasma interaction studies. The low density plasma target ( 10/cm) is confined in a mobile cryogenic electromagnetic charged particle trap, with the magnetic confinement field of 1–3 T maintained by a superconducting magnet. Ion plasmas for a large variety of ion species and charge...

Analog and digital simulations of Maxwellian plasmas for astrophysics1

Many astrophysical and laboratory plasmas possess Maxwell–Boltzmann (MB) electron energy distributions (EEDs). Interpreting or predicting the properties of these plasmas requires accurate knowledge of atomic processes such as radiative lifetimes, electron impact excitation and de-excitation, electron impact ionization, radiative recombination, dielectronic recombination, and charge transfer, al...
